Are Concerns About Treatment of Women in Shale Areas Legitimate?

In the news recently there have been several accounts, and opinion pieces published as a result of those accounts, about potential violence against women as a result of fracking.
Fracking? 
Well, that's a bit of a generalization. 
The source of the debate is an article that appeared in the New York Times last week about the explosion of young men who have moved into small towns in North Dakota as a result of the oil boom. These young men also have more than a few bucks to spend.
