Different Companies Taking Different Approaches to Utica Shale

Drilling for natural gas and oil is about making money.
Companies that are exploring the Utica shale under eastern Ohio have taken different routes as they pursue potential profits.
Chesapeake Energy, for example, has charged headstrong into drilling. It has more than a dozen rigs in place, more than 300 permits for horizontal wells and nearly 50 wells that are producing.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is EnerVest, which after drilling some horizontal wells has opted to sell its Utica leases. Instead of investing millions in drilling, the company hopes to create millions through a sale.
