Ohio Supreme Court: Oil & Gas Commission Has No Authority on Drilling Permit Appeals

A state oil and gas panel does not have the authority to hear appeals of drilling permits, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled today, agreeing with arguments made by Chesapeake Energy. 

The court ruled 5-2 to invalidate the actions by the Ohio Oil and Gas Commission in a dispute between Chesapeake Exploration LLC and a land owner, Summitcrest Inc. The commission “patently and unambiguously lacked jurisdiction” over the issue it was deciding.
