Permitting Picks Back Up in Ohio Utica Shale

After only one permit was listed on the weekly update from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources last week, the latest update shows that activity gained steam once again in the week ending November 7.

16 permits are listed on the latest report.  Belmont County was the hot spot, with 14 of those permits for wells there.  Those 14 permits were divided among four different drillers: Gulfport Energy (5), Rice Drilling (5), XTO Energy (3), and Ascent Resources (1).  The remaining two permits on the report were both issued to Chesapeake Exploration for wells in Columbiana County.

Despite 16 permits being listed, the cumulative total of permits issued for horizontal drilling in Ohio's Utica shale increased by just 13.  There are now 2,078 permits issued.  1,635 wells have been drilled, 1,034 are producing, and the Utica rig count fell for the second straight week, down to 20.
