Utica Shale Hits 700 Producing Wells in Ohio; 21 New Permits Issued

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources released the latest weekly permitting update this week, and it was another active week for new Utica shale permits.

21 new permits were issued last week.  They were spread across just 4 counties.  Harrison County was the hottest spot, with 8 of the 21 permits (5 to American Energy Utica and 3 to Gulfport Energy).  Trailing just behind in new permits was Guernsey County, with 7 (all to American Energy Utica).  The other 6 permits were divided between Belmont County (4) and Noble County (2).

With this latest activity the total number of permits bumps up to 1,685, with 1,238 wells drilled.  And after holding at just under 700 wells producing last week, the report now indicates that an even 700 are producing in the Utica shale.  The Utica rig count is 54.
