Utica Shale Hits 1,300 Wells Drilled on Latest Permitting Update

The latest update on permitting from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources shows that the Utica shale has crossed over another round number milestone, this time in the number of wells that have been drilled in the state.

24 new permits were issued last week.  Hilcorp Energy was very busy, obtaining 12 new permits for drilling in Columbiana County.  The remaining 12 permits last week were split evenly between Guernsey and Noble counties, with 4 of the 6 permits issued in each of those counties going to Eclipse Resources.

So, there have now been 1,766 permits issued for horizontal drilling in the Utica shale in Ohio.  Exactly 1,300 wells have now been drilled, and 712 are producing.  The Utica rig count climbed back up to 51.
